Kansas KILLS Home Inspector Licensing

Home inspector licenses are history in Kansas.

The Kansas law was enacted under a “sunset” provision only a few years ago.  (The first regulations were approved in Oct., 2011.  K.A.R. 13-2-1.)  “Sunset” laws expire automatically if the “sunset” rule is not repealed by a later law.

Kansas called its licensing law a “registration” measure to assure “professional competence and financial responsibility.”  KSA 58-    4503.

About 185 home inspectors were registered in Kansas.

The Kansas legislature passed a sunset repeal (SB37) in 2013.

The sunset repeal, SB 37, was vetoed by Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback later last year.  Kansas home inspector licensing immediately died off and the registration board disappeared.

Brownback is a former radio talk show host and lawyer who served one term in Congress before he was elected to the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Bob Dole.  Brownback ran for President in 2008, but dropped out and endorsed John McCain, who became the Republican candidate.  He was elected Gov. in 2010, with over 63% of the vote.  As Governor, he signed into law one of the largest tax cuts in Kansas history.
